The company, created by Marius Berliet (1866-1949) after acquiring the factory of the Société des Anciens Etablissements Audibert & Lavirotte in 1902. Berliet built cars until 1939 and trucks from 1946. A company was created in Algeria, the Société Africaine des Automobiles Berliet-Berliet Algérie in 1957, in Morocco: Berliet Maroc in 1958.

The company was bought by Citroën in 1967 then sold, under pressure from the State, to Renault (Industrial Vehicles) in 1975.

The company was taken over by Paul Berliet, son of the founder who led the company for many years. Paul Berliet was at the origin of the Marius-Berliet Automobile Foundation in Montellier (Ain) which kept about 300 vehicles. Canceled title (stamp) with coupons at the bottom of the title.
