The company, created by Marius Berliet, built cars until 1939 and trucks from 1946. It acquired the factory from the Société des Anciens Etablissements Audibert & Lavirotte in 1902.

A company was created in Algeria, the Société Africaine des Automobiles Berliet-Berliet Algérie in 1957, in Morocco: Berliet Maroc in 1958. The company was bought by Citroën in 1967 then sold, under pressure from the State, to Renault (Industrial Vehicles) in 1975.

Signature of P. Berliet (Paul Berliet, 1918-2012), son of the founder, who remained in charge of the company for many years. He was at the origin of the Marius-Berliet Automobile Foundation in Montellier (Ain) which kept about 300 vehicles.
