In the 16th century, a family of wealthy merchants, the Gontiers, Lord of La Caunette, exploited iron and silver and built a castle directly on the mine shaft.
The La Caunette concession, which extended over an area of 87 hectares, was established on February 10, 1879 for the exploitation of silver lead for the benefit of the Société des Mines d’Argent de La Caunette.
