This certificate for 10 shares of 1500 piastres No. 2494 of CARIC (Công-Ty Kỹ-Nghệ Thủ-Thiêm, i.e. Compagnie Industrielle de Thủ Thiêm), issued in Saigon in 1976. The fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975 marked the end of the Republic of Vietnam and the beginning of the country's reunification under a communist regime, officially proclaimed in July 1976. This document, issued after the fall but before or during reunification, bears witness to an extraordinary transitional period: in the weeks and months following the fall, some companies continued to issue securities under the old legal frameworks, in piastres (the former currency of French Indochina and then South Vietnam), before the reunified Vietnam's đồng finally took hold. Thủ Thiêm is an industrial district facing Saigon on the Saigon River. The bilingual French/Vietnamese wording still reflects the French colonial heritage. This certificate is of absolute rarity on the international scripophily market: commercial documents from the post-fall-of-Saigon period are virtually nonexistent outside government archives
