Site of the first French colony in the region established by treaty with the local Afars rulers, 1862.

The French interest was to have a coaling station for steamships which would become important upon the opening of the Suez canal.

Up to that time ships had to buy coal at the British port of Aden.

In 1891 the colonial administration moved to Djibouti and the french Somali Coast was constituted in 1896 by the union of the protectorates of Obock and Tadjoura with Djibouti for capital.

Head office 30 rue Chabrol in Paris.
