Compagnie Générale d'Ethiopia was set up in 1927 with largely French capital. Initially a simple study company, with a capital of 2 million, it then increased its capital to 16 million francs.

At the request of His Majesty the Negus, the first act was to reorganize the "Ethiopian Society for the Development of Agriculture and Commerce" created by Menelick himself, and its transformation under the name of "National Society of Ethiopia " whose headquarters were in Addis Ababa.

The purpose of the Company was to carry out any industrial, agricultural, commercial, transport, insurance, warehouse, transit, commission, representation, public works, building, all supplies of mining and forestry operations that can cooperate in the economic development of Ethiopia.
