The Cercle Social de Mulhouse is one of Alsace's oldest civil associations, founded by notarial deed of 3 April 1838 before Maître Findherr, Notary in Mulhouse. Organized as a civil company of shares, the Cercle Social brought together the notables and bourgeoisie of Mulhouse for cultural, social and leisure activities. The city of Mulhouse, a major Alsatian industrial centre in the textile industry, had an active and cultivated bourgeoisie that identified with institutions like this club. This share N°393 of 500 francs, in the name of Edouard Goldschmidt, Industrialist in Belfort, was issued on 10 October 1933. The participation of a Belfort resident in a Mulhouse institution highlights the links between the two cities of northern Alsace and the Territory of Belfort. The interwar years were for Mulhouse, returned to France in 1918 after 47 years of German annexation, a period of rebuilding Alsatian identity. The document is adorned with two vignettes depicting the neoclassical façade of the Cercle building and its meeting room, precious witnesses to Alsatian bourgeois architecture of the era.
