A remarkable historical piece: a One-Hundred-Franc Coupon issued by the Société Système Sicardo, created by private deed of 4 January 1848 for the construction of a revolutionary steamboat according to the plans of the Marseille inventor Sicardo. Share capital of 300,000 francs divided into 300 shares, each share itself divided into ten coupons of one hundred francs — an innovative financial arrangement to democratize access to industrial capital. Share Number 258, Coupon Number 2577, to the benefit of Madame Aguel, widow Thomas. Issued a few weeks before the February 1848 Revolution that overthrew Louis-Philippe and proclaimed the Second Republic, this piece bears witness to the technical and financial effervescence of the end of the July Monarchy, when French maritime industrialization sought to catch up with the British. The lithographic design is exquisite: a central vignette depicting a superb three-masted steamship under smoke, flags in the wind and a rough sea, a border adorned with flourishes, elegant cursive calligraphy. Charavel lithograph, handwritten signature of the Managing Director Sicardo himself. A document of great rarity, a witness to the early days of French steam shipping. Ideal for maritime scripophily, the history of technology, or a 1848-Republic collection.
