The existence of spas is based on the exploitation of mineral springs with recognized therapeutic virtues. The word "thermalism" was used for the first time in 1845.

It then designated the medical use of mineral waters and it was not until 1933 that it was used in its current meaning of exploitation of mineral springs in thermal spas. The spa towns attract sick people who come to seek relief from their suffering, hence the organic link between hydrotherapy and medicine, far from the notion of pleasure associated with vacationing.

During the 19th century, the number of sources recognized for their therapeutic qualities exploded.
