Société Anonyme Journal Le "Gil Blas"
Share of 500F - Paris
Share to bearer of 500 francs. Small issue of 1500 shares.
French daily newspaper created in 1879 by Auguste Dumont, founder and administrator of several newspapers (Le Figaro, La République, La Lanterne ...).
The newspaper notably publishes a serial written by Guy de Maupassant in 1885, which will then be published under the title Bel Ami.
When Auguste Dumont died in 1885, the newspaper was taken over by the printer Éloi Dubuisson, who created a weekly supplement, the "Gil Blas Illustré", with original color illustrations. It is a success.
In 1911, the newspaper was taken over by Pierre Mortier, then suspended publication in 1914, with the outbreak of the First World War. Pierre Mortier relaunched the newspaper in 1921 and remained its owner until 1940, when the newspaper disappeared.
Linked to Desfossés, financiers and press bosses, Mortier was also director of the weekly "Le Monde Illustré" during the 1930s.
