The head office was located at 12 rue de la Grange-Batelière in Paris.
Le Siècle, subtitled "Political, Literary and Social Economy Journal" was founded in 1836 under the monarchy by Armand Dutacq.
The newspaper became republican in 1848 and experienced a prosperous period and became the most influential daily.
In 1868, Henri d'Orléans, Duc d'Aumale (famous owner of the Domain of Chantilly), took a stake in the newspaper through the intermediary of Léon Plée, a foreign policy enthusiast who joined the newspaper in 1850.
The latter launched the Political Bulletin, format which will then be resumed by all the newspapers.
The newspaper declines under the third republic, gradually losing its audience until 1917. It will cease definitively in 1932.
