The Société des mines de Lens exploited coal in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais mining area. Founded in 1852, it was the largest coal mining company in the Nord and Pas-de-Calais basin. The company was run for 42 years by Edouard Bollaert, general mining agent, who gave his name to one of the pits. On 6 November 1929, the Compagnie des Mines de Lens acquired land to build a new stadium which would become the Bollaert stadium of Racing Club de Lens. The company was transformed into a Société Anonyme in 1920, then nationalized in 1946.
