The "Gagnant Forcément" (Bound to Win) loan launched under the patronage of H.M. the King of Sardinia was organized by the house F. Pagella & Cie of Turin in the mid-19th century. Bond No. 69508, Series 696, bears a distribution date set for 1 May 1853. This type of financial instrument, popular in 19th-century Europe, guaranteed repayment to the bearer either by lottery draw (with a premium) or at term, hence the name "Gagnant Forcément", which made it a secure, popular savings product appreciated by small investors. The Kingdom of Sardinia, under Victor Emmanuel II and his prime minister Cavour, was then going through a period of decisive economic and political reforms that would lead to Italian Unification in 1861. This certificate is thus a direct witness to the financial history of the Savoyard monarchy on the eve of the great transformations of the Risorgimento.
