The company was founded by Xavier Ruel in Lyon. Ruel opened his store on rue de Rivoli in Paris in 1856. The brand took the name of Bazar de Napoléon.

When Ruel died in 1900, his grandson, Henri Viguier, took over the company.

The Bazar de l'Hotel de Ville, or BHV, then became a public limited company in 1931. The BHV company went public in 1960.

The Hôtel de Ville Bazaar, now operated by BHV Exploitation under the BHV Marais brand since 2013, belongs to the Galeries Lafayette group.
