This Bond of $1,000 (N°991, Letter L) is one of the most historically significant financial documents ever encountered in scripophily. Issued on 1 June 1869 in New York by the insurgent Cuban Republic, it bears the signatures of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, founder of the First Republic of Cuba, "Father of the Cuban Homeland," who proclaimed independence on 10 October 1868 from his La Demajagua estate and of José Morales Lemus, the Cuban Republic's diplomatic representative in Washington, tasked with securing American recognition and support. The $20 million loan at 7%, contracted in New York, was intended to finance the armed insurrection against Spanish rule. Céspedes, who freed his own slaves and called them to join the struggle, is the absolute icon of the Cuban revolutionary tradition. This bond is thus a direct witness to the birth of the Cuban independence movement, ten years before the 1895 Independence War that would achieve final liberation. A document of national and historical importance comparable to the American revolutionary documents of 1776 or the French ones of 1789. Extremely rare on the world scripophily market.
