Bono of 5 Pesos Oro, Series D, No. 00613, issued on 14 November 1887 by the Ilustre Ayuntamiento de Santa Clara (Cuba), by Cuban municipalities under Spanish administration, which issued several denomination series to reach the full range of potential subscribers, from small local savers to great colonial fortunes. Series D, with its value of 5 Pesos, targeted investors of modest means, helping to spread and locally anchor the municipal debt within the population. Santa Clara in 1887, a provincial town of about 30,000 inhabitants, was developing thanks to its strategic position at the heart of the island and the growth of sugar production from the surrounding plantations. This small bono is a touching document in its modesty and authenticity: it bears witness to the everyday economic life of a Cuban town at the very end of the colonial period.
