Santa Clara, a city founded in 1689 in the province of Las Villas in central Cuba, was under Spanish administration when this Bono of 100 Pesos Oro, Series A, No. 00285, was issued on 14 November 1887. Cuban municipalities issued bonds to finance their infrastructure: roads, public lighting, drinking water, and administrative buildings. This certificate is all the more historically interesting because Santa Clara is intimately linked to Cuba's two great revolutions. During the War of Independence (1895-1898), the city was the scene of violent fighting. Sixty years later, in December 1958, the Battle of Santa Clara led by Ernesto "Che" Guevara sealed the fate of the Batista dictatorship. The issue of this bono in 1887 falls within the troubled period following the Ten Years' War (1868-1878), Cuba's first insurrection, and precedes by eight years the final war of independence. A document of great historical value for collectors of Cuban and Ibero-American scripophily.
