In the 16th century, a family of wealthy merchants, the Gontiers, Lord of La Caunette, exploited iron and silver and built a castle directly on the mine shaft.

The La Caunette concession, which extended over an area of ​​87 hectares, was established on February 10, 1879 for the exploitation of silver lead for the benefit of the Société des Mines d’Argent de La Caunette.
