Philadelphia Baltimore Washington Railroad 1907
General Mortgage Gold Bond 1000$ 4% Philadelphia Baltimore Washington Railroad 1907, due 1977, portrait engraving, US railroad scripophily, no. 4736.
Superb General Mortgage Gold Bond Series C of 1,000 dollars at 4 per cent issued by The Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington Railroad Company, dated 1 July 1907 and maturing on 1 July 1977. The PB&W, a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad, operated the strategic New York-Washington line along the Northeast Corridor — one of the most important railway arteries in the United States, still today an integral part of the Amtrak network. Number 4736. The purple/mauve design features a magnificent engraved portrait of a company executive (probably President Alexander J. Cassatt or one of his immediate successors), a rich neo-classical border with interlaced geometric motifs. Dense typographic text on a guilloché background, two heraldic "1000" vignettes, printed signature of the President and the Treasurer. Likely printed by American Bank Note Company. Document in fine condition, fresh inks and cleaned. An iconic piece of American railroad scripophily, for a Pennsylvania Railroad or Northeast Corridor collection, or for portrait-engraving enthusiasts. A witness to the height of American railroad capitalism during the Belle Époque.
