Jewett helped found the Iowa Loan & Trust Company and the Des Moines Scale Company in 1872. He was also a founder of Drake University and organized the YMCA.
In 1888, an invention caught his attention, the typewriter, which quickly became a worldwide commercial success and won awards at the Paris and Chicago World's Fairs.
Jewett Typewriter encountered difficulties in the early 1900s as some Eastern shareholders wanted to move the factory to Cleveland.
The company managed to last until 1910 but was bought by Underwood Typewriter Company which completely ceased production in Iowa.
