In 1884, Ch. Chamberland, a biological physicist, developed a filter made from a porous porcelain candle to eliminate microbes from drinking water. This filter will make it possible to fight against the spread of typhoid fever present in Paris at that time and to be used as a new research instrument, which will allow the discovery of diphtheria and tetanus toxins. In 1888, Chamberland was appointed head of department at the Pasteur Institute responsible for the microbial department applied to hygiene and the vaccine department.
The company had premises at 58 rue Notre-Dame-de-Lorette.
