Charles Sabourin, Doctor of Medicine born in 1849 in Chatellerault, former intern at the Hospitals of Paris, specializes in medical research, in particular anatomy and pulmonary pathology. He was soon recognized for his work and opened in Vernet, facing the Canigou massif, in 1890, his first establishment to treat patients suffering from consumption or pulmonary tuberculosis.

He then created the first sanatorium in France in 1897 at the Château de Durtol, an already existing building, located 520 meters above sea level, in the middle of a five-hectare park. The sanatorium has the particularity of remaining open all year round. It has 58 simple rooms and can accommodate up to 116 patients.

The Château de Durtol now houses a cardio-pneumological medical clinic.
