Share of 500 francs issued in Paris in 1880.

Famous newspaper initially created in 1868 by Henri de Rochefort (1831-1913) who took advantage of the law of May 11, 1868 removing the prior authorization, necessary until then, to create a new newspaper. Violent opponent of the regime of the Second Empire, the Lantern is a weekly pamphlet directed against the Empire. Pursued, Henri de Rochefort went into exile in Belgium, returned in 1869 and went into exile again from 1874 to 1876.

The title was taken up in 1877 by a daily newspaper which survived until the interwar period, located at 5 rue du Coq Héron in Paris under the name Mayer & Cie.

In 1888, this newspaper took part in General Boulanger's campaign and in 1895 became the organ of the socialist radicals under the direction of Aristide Briand.
