The Société Internationale de la Photographie des Couleurs, founded in Paris in 1899, was at the cutting edge of the technological innovation of its time: color photography was then the ultimate dream of scientists and artists, at a time when photography still existed only in black and white. This share No. 1.020 is adorned with a strikingly beautiful Art Nouveau vignette, signed Lucien Métivet (1863-1930), a leading Parisian illustrator and poster artist. The vignette depicts a winged angel holding a camera, framed by the medallion portraits of Joseph Nicéphore Niépce and Louis Daguerre, the two founding fathers of photography. This allegorical iconography is of exceptional symbolic and artistic richness. The Belle Époque saw the flourishing of numerous innovative companies in the fields of photography, cinema and new technologies. This certificate is thus a founding document in the history of color photography, predating the Autochrome process of the Lumière brothers (1907).
