Former private French bank created in 1853 following the law of July 11, 1851 on the organization of colonial banks, signed by Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte. After appointing its director in 1852, the Bank of Martinique opened its first branch in Saint-Pierre, rue de la Banque, in the Mouillage district, just opposite the town hall. After the eruption of Montagne Pelée in 1902, the headquarters and reserves of the bank which survived the catastrophe were transferred to Fort-de-France. The Bank of Martinique merged in 1967 with the Bank of Guadeloupe to create the Bank of the French Antilles.
