At the end of the 19th century, there were three refineries in Marseille which employed 1,500 workers.

In 1865, the Charles Rostand refinery went bankrupt. Its manager is sentenced to one year in prison for bankruptcy and breach of trust.

The Mediterranean Sugar Refinery was then founded in 1865 from the assets of Charles Rostand & Cie. This refinery or the Saint-Louis refinery processed raw sugars imported duty-free from Java, Cuba, the West Indies and Reunion.
