Canada Steamship Lines
Fractional Certificate, ¼ Common Share No. FC0632, Canada Steamship Lines, Royal Trust Company, Montreal, 25 January 1937. Canadian river-shipping scripophily.
Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) is one of the most important river-shipping companies in Canadian history, operating a fleet of cargo ships on the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence. This fractional certificate for ¼ of a common share, held by the Royal Trust Company as transfer agent, is a document of rare singularity: representing a quarter share meant this certificate had to be combined with three others of the same kind to obtain a full share. This type of fraction typically resulted from an adjustment during a stock split or a stock-dividend payment. Royal Trust Company, one of the largest Canadian trust companies, served as trustee agent for many major companies listed on the Montreal Stock Exchange. This document is a perfect example of the curiosities of Canadian fractional-share scripophily.
