Tramways d'Astrakhan Bruxelles
Bearer ordinary share, Astrakhan Tramways, S.A. Brussels, capital 2M francs. Superb Art Nouveau certificate, rare Russo-Belgian scripophily.
The Astrakhan Tramways, a public limited company established in Brussels at the end of the 19th century, illustrate the golden age of Belgian expansion in urban transport across Europe and the Russian Empire. Astrakhan, a great port city on the lower Volga, on the Caspian Sea, saw its electric tramway network inaugurated at the turn of the century thanks to this Belgian capital.
This certificate is a BEARER ORDINARY SHARE, with no nominal value stated, issued on a share capital of 2,000,000 francs. Number No. 00182 (a very low number, of interest to collectors). Magnificent Art Nouveau design in blue and orange tones: vignettes of Astrakhan cityscapes at the top, two oriental pavilions framing the central cartouche, a Russian double-headed eagle at the bottom left and a coat of arms at the bottom right. Handwritten signature "Brunet 1899" at the bottom right (engraver). Signatures of two directors.
Apparent condition: good overall, colors still vivid, paper somewhat fragile at the edges, slight losses on the left stub, small stains.
A very beautiful Art Nouveau piece, of dual scripophile interest (Belgium + Russia), a highly sought-after tramway theme.
