Gold is discovered near the Butte by William Allison and G.O. Humphreys in 1864. In 1874 William L. Farlin finds manganese which turns out to be silver.

The mine was created in 1876. The name Parrot is not derived from the animal but from the name of R.P. Parrot, a young lawyer.

The Parrot Silver and Copper Company was bought in 1880 by Franklin Farrel of Ansonia, Connecticut, then by Anaconda Company in 1910.
