Construction of the Mississippi Central Railorad began in 1853, and the line from Canton to Jackson was completed in 1860, just before the outbreak of the Civil War. In 1878, the company was bought by the Illinois Central Railroad which merged it with its subsidiary Chicago, St. Louis and New Orleans Railroad. In 1909 the company bought the Natchez & Eastern Railway.

Income and equipment mortgage bond delivered by the company to Samuel H. Edgar and Georges H. Bates.

The bond was guaranteed by the Southern Railroad Association.
