This 5% Ottoman Imperial Loan bond of 1896 is a masterpiece of Ottoman scripophily. Bearing the number 017.141, it is denominated in three European currencies, the pound sterling, the French franc and the German mark, which reflects the international character of the loan, subscribed on the great financial markets of Europe. The lot includes the front and back of the certificate as well as the coupon sheet, making this set a complete and extremely rare document. Ottoman loans of the late 19th century served to finance the modernization of the Empire and were instruments of external debt scrutinized by the European powers. The presence of the three denominations in the same issue perfectly illustrates the mechanisms of pre-1914 international finance. An exceptional piece for any collector of Ottoman securities.
