The French Bank of South Africa was created in January 1895 by the banker Jacques de Gunzbourg, to allow French savers to participate in the financing of the gold mines in South Africa.

It merged in 1901 with the Banque Franco-Egyptienne to form the French Bank for Commerce and Industry.
