Founded in 1801 in Saint Petersburg by Nikolai Putilov, the Putilov Works became, at the turn of the 20th century, the largest armaments, metallurgy and railway construction complex in the Russian Empire. An emblematic site of the labor movement, it was the epicenter of the 1905 and 1917 strikes that contributed to the fall of the Tsar.
