St. Albans & Swanton Traction Company
Six Per Cent Preferred Stock, 50 shares No. 13, St. Albans & Swanton Traction Company, Charles Jenkins, Vermont. Vermont American electric-tramway scripophily.
The St. Albans & Swanton Traction Company operated a network of electric tramways in northern Vermont, linking the towns of Saint Albans and Swanton on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain. Electric Traction Companies formed, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the backbone of urban and interurban transport in North America, before being supplanted by the automobile and buses. This certificate No. 13 for 50 preferred shares at 6% is one of the earliest numbers in the series, suggesting a founding issue. This document is a valuable piece of Belle Époque American public-transport scripophily, and more particularly of New England's electric tramway networks.
