La Belle Jardinière was founded in 1824 by Pierre Parissot on the Ile de la Cité in Paris. Head office was located rue du Pont-Neuf.

It was the first department store in Paris to bring together sales areas and clothing workshops in one place, making it possible to offer "ready-to-wear" clothing to low-income customers.

The company closed in 1972.
