The Compagnie Générale Electrique is founded in 1898 in Nancy (50 rue Oberlin). Its purpose is the manufacture of electric motors and electrical equipment for industry. Its Chairman is Alphonse Francin and the main shareholder and managing director is the Swiss Charles Vicarino.
The company became the "Nouvelle Compagnie Electrique de Nancy" in 1957.
In 1967, the company was bought by Compagnie Électro-Mécanique (CEM) (becoming Compagnie Électro-Mécanique, Establishment of Nancy) then in 1983 by Alsthom.
