The company was formed in 1838 under the name Clavaud et Cie for the manufacture of nails by mechanical process. The registered office was located at the home of Mr. Clavaud, 45 rue Laffitte in Paris, and the ironworks factory in Oliez near Stenay (Meuse).

Following bad business, the company was declared bankrupt following a judgment of the commercial court of Montmédy in 1839.

Today the last French nail shop, still in operation, is located in Creil in the Oise, the Clouterie Rivierre installed in 1888.
