Certificate of 5000 Drachmes at 8% issued in Athens in 1926.
The first national bank of Greece was created by the Greek State in 1841 thanks to a loan granted by the Swiss diplomat and banker Jean-Gabriel Eynard to King Olon 1st, young king at the head of the country. 5000 shares are issued by the bank, which then issues the currency (notes issued in Drachmas) and acts as the central bank. Eynard buys 300 shares and persuades the King of Bavaria (father of the young sovereign Otho), the Rothschild family and major Greek financiers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire to also invest. The bank quickly went bankrupt in 1843.
In 1926, a new central bank, the Bank of Greece was created to separate the issuance of money from commercial banking activity.
