Famous British shipping company founded in 1845, which notably owned the sad famous Titanic which sank in 1912 in the Atlantic Ocean. The company also serves Australia and New Zealand.
The company was bought in 1867 by Thomas Henry Ismay who renamed it Oceanic Steam Navigation Company. After Ismay's death in 1899, the company was taken over by his son, Bruce, and in 1902 joined the International Mercantile Marine Company of American financier John Pierpont Morgan.
In 1927 the company was taken over by Lord Kylsant of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. But the poor management of Kylsant weakens the company hit by the Great Depression. The company will then merge with its rival the Cunard Line to form the Cunard-White Star Line.
