The Société Coloniale Bordelaise de Madagascar fits within the movement of colonial exploitation companies that flourished in France following the conquest of Madagascar by General Duchesne (1895) and its definitive annexation by France in 1896. Bordeaux, the major Atlantic seaport and capital of Guyenne, was actively involved in colonial trade through many specialized companies. This certificate N°79, representing a share of 300 francs (N°466) in the name of Dufau de Lamothe S. in Arveyres, a commune of the Gironde near Libourne, dates from 1898. At that time, Madagascar represented to French investors a virgin territory of supposedly immense wealth: minerals, precious timber, fertile agricultural land and commercial potential with the Indian Ocean. The Société Coloniale Bordelaise de Madagascar sought to exploit these resources for the benefit of its regional shareholders. A French colonial scripophily document with a Belle Époque flavor, interesting for collectors of French colonial history and the history of southwestern France.
