Oaxaca de Juárez, capital of the State of Oaxaca in southern Mexico, is the birthplace of Benito Juárez, the emblematic president of Mexico, whose name it bears. This municipal bono of $1,000 (Letra A, No. 1060), issued on 1 January 1910, is one of the last Mexican bonds of the Porfirian period. Indeed, 1910 marks the centenary of Mexican Independence, an occasion Porfirio Díaz wanted to celebrate with great pomp, but also the year the Mexican Revolution led by Francisco Madero broke out, which would overthrow the regime in 1911. This trilingual bono (Spanish/English/French) bears witness to the efforts of the Oaxacan municipality to attract international capital to modernize the city.
