Navigation de la Dronne S.A.
Share of 1.000F - Bordeaux 1835
Share to bearer of 1.000 francs issued in Bordeaux in 1835, after Royal Ordinance of 1831, February 15.
Very rare document with only 315 shares issued.
In 1821, Jean-Pierre Trigant-Gautier, former mayor of La Roche-Chalais, drafted a navigation plan for the Dronne river from Ribérac to La Fourchée sous Coutras, inspired by the example of the Dropt river, where by a winch system, the boats were hoisted to cross the dams, without using a lock.
In 1828, engineers Vezin and Devanne obtained authorization from King Louis-Philippe to apply this technique to make the Dronne navigable from Coutras to Roche-Chalais. Work started in 1831. Unfortunately, it was a technical and financial failure and the engineers abandoned the project in 1841. The company went bankrupt. This is why the Dronne, "the most beautiful river in France" according to Élisée Reclus, has never really been navigable.
Beautiful lithograph on large format certificate. The engraving illustrates the technique used for the project with horses rotating around a mechanical axis, winding the chains and activating the winch to raise or lower the boat.
