Allevard-les-Bains is a spa resort in the Northern Alps of Isère, known since Antiquity for its sulfur-rich waters beneficial to respiratory and rheumatic conditions. At the turn of the 20th century, French spa resorts were experiencing a golden age, attracting a bourgeois and aristocratic clientele concerned with their health. The casino formed the social and entertainment hub of the resort.
