The Banco de Trujillo was founded in 1871 in the Peruvian coastal city of Trujillo, former Spanish colonial capital of northern Peru. This Título No. 193, with a nominal value of 5,000 Soles, was issued on 2 September 1872 in the name of Francisco Calderón. The period of this certificate's creation coincides with the height of the Peruvian guano era, when the export of this natural fertilizer to Europe generated immense wealth and spurred the creation of local banking institutions. Less than ten years after this certificate was issued, the War of the Pacific (1879-1884) would upend the Peruvian economy and lead to the disappearance of almost all the era's financial archives. This is why 19th-century Peruvian banking securities are extremely rare today on the world scripophily market. This one represents a precious testimony to Peru's economic history in its early modern institutional beginnings.
