Long after Charles Goodyear filed his patent for vulcanizing rubber in 1845, Scottish John Boyd Dunlop, a veterinarian by training, founded his first tire factory in 1889 following the filing of his patent for an air tire with valve in 1888. But Dunlop's invention does not allow easy repair in the event of a puncture. In 1891, Édouard and André Michelin solved this problem by inventing the first removable tire with an inner tube.
