The oil refinery company ASTRA ROMANA was founded in 1880 in Ploiesti, Romania. It was part of the Royal Dutch Shell trust from 1911 to 1947.
In 2009, Astra Romana formed together with several companies owned by businessman Ioan Niculae, the cogeneration electricity and heat production company Energy Cogeneration Group, comprising the chemical companies Viromet, Amonil Slobozia, Amurco Bacău, Ga- Pro-Co Chemicals Săvinești, Donau Chem Turnu Măgurele and Astra Română, as well as the InterAgro company.
Production was stopped in 2004.
