In January 1896, the French State, by decree of the President of the Republic Félix Faure, entrusted the city of Saumur with the task of completing the Saumur-Fontevrault railway network on the Saumur-Poitiers line. This company therefore completed the work of Mr. Monprofit and opened the line at the end of 1896.

After 9 years of operation, the company gave way to the Compagnie des Tramways de Saumur et Extension, a sign of the first financial difficulties of the network marked by the development of the automobile. The company ceased operations in 1929.
