Company founded in 1880 for the exploitation of nickel mines in New Caledonia by the British John Higginson and the French Henri Marbeau and Jules Garnier.

The company was bought in 1883 by the Rothschild family. The company merged with its main competitor in 1931. Elf-Aquitaine took a 50% stake in the 1970s.

The Le Nickel company operated nickel and cobalt mines in New Caledonia, factories in Le Havre, Scotland (Kirkintilloch), Erdington (Birmingham) and Iserlohn (Westphalia).
