Auguste Stigler was the pioneer of electric lifts at the beginning of the 20th century, but also of funiculars and lifts in general. The first elevator was installed in 1898 by his Milan-based engineering company. By 1947, the company had installed 45,000 lifts, half of them in Italy. The company had a construction and repair workshop located in Nice, rue Dabray, another in Paris, 75 boulevard Gouvion-de-Saint-Cyr, offices at 11 rue du Havre in Paris, agencies in Paris, Nice, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Algiers. An elevator was installed in the Grand Palais des Champs-Elysées.

The Stigler company was bought by the Otis company in 1947.
